A GOOF

I said in the last post that when the first container was set down on its concrete piers, I was glad to see that “everything was exactly where it needed to be.” Well, this wasn’t quite the truth.

The six piers that this container would sit on were, in fact, where they needed to be, and at the right height. All good there. The problem was with the seventh pier, the one that had nothing to do with Container #1. This pier was in place only for the future, when it would support the corner of Container #2, which will come next year.

I noted earlier that the piers supporting the sides of a container aren’t the same height as those at the corners.

Because of this, the seventh pier was supposed to be lower than the one just five feet away. It was supposed to be about an inch lower. But it ended up almost three inches lower. It was one of the very first sonotubes I set in the ground, and before I bought my laser level. Anyway, it was off.

This means that when the next container comes in, we’ll need to shim an inch and a half or two inches. Not the end of the world—it will just mean the expense of some steel and the time to weld each piece of steel shim in place.

Live and learn.
