A NOTE ABOUT WORKING IN A STEEL BOX IN MISSISSIPPI IN THE SUMMER

When we entered the container in early July after a break of a month or so, it was around 150 degrees in there. And it was evening.

We brought out one of the window air conditioners from our house, which is on the other side of the yard, and put it in the window we’d installed in the container. It did some good, bringing the temperature down to 100-ish. Between that and two large box fans, it was a bearable situation. But we went through rivers of Gatorade and bottled water, and the sweat soaked not only my shirt and pants but my belt as well.

I live and work in California for a while and get to Mississippi three times a year, with each visit lasting eight or nine days. This means that container work in the summer is unavoidable. Looking for a bright side to working in the heat, I thought that at least I’d sweat away some weight. But it didn’t work that way.

Oh well.
